Driving footfall at quiet times of year is always a challenge, so to give Coppergate an early summer boost, we teamed up with York BID to create a unique Wimbledon experience, which is now in its second year.
Throughout the 2018 and 2019 Wimbledon tournaments, we showed live matches on a screen brought into Coppergate for the event. The central flowerbed was transformed from blank canvas into a vibrant green lawn, and deckchairs brought in to provide a comfortable outdoors space in which visitors could enjoy the matches. For 2019, we enhanced the displays with a Wimbledon-themed Brollywalk, as well as fun tennis balls which look as though they are embedded in the centre's glass canopy.
The events have been a huge success. The deckchairs were busy throughout each day, with visitors enjoying a relaxing place in the heart of the city to relax and unwind with a coffee or ice cream from Coppergate food and drink outlets.
In fact, the seating area was so popular, that the deckchairs are now a summer-long feature of Coppergate, giving locals and visitors alike an oasis of calm in the city centre.
